SERVICE AT THE MISSION SINCE
January 2021
Linda and I were married on February 7, 1981. We met in 1974, when I was 13 and she was 12, on a waterskiing trip to Lake Havasu, Arizona. We met the FIRST time when we were toddlers (her parents were friends with my aunt and uncle). That means that we’ve known each other since Christmas, 1964. The Lord blessed us with Kevin in 1988, with Sarah in 1990, and gave us a wonderful surprise with Grace in 1997.
I attended Talbot School of Theology at Biola University in La Mirada, California, earning a Master’s Degree in Ministry with a Pastoral Emphasis. I graduated in 1993, and a few months later became the Senior Pastor of Gateway Bible Church in Paso Robles, California. After 8 years the Lord opened a door to be the Teaching Pastor of Christ is King Community Church, here in Norfolk, Nebraska. In 2013 we planted One Hope Fellowship, a church which is Reformed in theology and Baptist in practice. I am also Pastor of Community of Believers Church in Creighton, Nebraska, about an hour northwest of Norfolk. Almost every week finds us leaving our house at 6:30 am, having church in Creighton at 8, leaving by 9:20, and having church in Norfolk at 10:45 am.
My connection with the Norfolk Rescue Mission goes back to 2014, when I began preaching at Monday evening chapels a couple of times a month. I was later asked to join the Board of Directors, and served for several years, until the Lord opened up the opportunity to come on staff part-time.
I spend Friday evenings as the Evening Men’s Chaplain, which brings frequent opportunities to teach from the Word on a one-on-one basis. I am also currently teaching Old and New Testament Survey classes for the New Life Program.
The Mission uses a software program called HEART to track everything there is to know about our guests, going back almost 20 years. I discovered that Jean-Luc Picard, of the Federation Starship Enterprise, has been a guest a few times. (We’re not supposed to share private information, but Jean-Luc is currently out of the galaxy, and rumor has it that he’s not likely to return).
"I charge you in the presence of God and of Christ Jesus, who is to judge the living and the dead, and by his appearing and his kingdom: preach the word; be ready in season and out of season; reprove, rebuke, and exhort, with complete patience and teaching. For the time is coming when people will not endure sound teaching, but having itching ears they will accumulate for themselves teachers to suit their own passions, and will turn away from listening to the truth and wander off into myths. As for you, always be sober-minded, endure suffering, do the work of an evangelist, fulfill your ministry." 2 Timothy 4:1–5 (2016 ESV)
